                Sushi is a delicious and healthy Japanese dish that has become popular worldwide. Making sushi at home can seem daunting, but it’s actually quite simple. This homemade sushi recipe will guide you through the process step by step.


     2 cups sushi rice

     2 cups water

     1/4 cup rice vinegar

     1 tablespoon sugar

     1 teaspoon salt

     Nori sheets

     Fillings of your choice (cucumber, avocado, crab meat, salmon, etc.)

     Soy sauce


     Pickled ginger


Bamboo sushi mat

Wooden spoon or spatula

Saucepan with a lid

Sharp knife


a. Rinse the sushi rice in cold water until the water runs clear. 

b. In a saucepan, combine the rice and water, and bring to a boil. 

c. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, until the rice is cooked and the water is absorbed. 

d. In a small bowl, mix the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. 

e. When the rice is cooked, transfer it to a large bowl, and add the vinegar mixture. Stir gently to combine.

Rolling the Sushi 

a. Lay a sheet of nori on the bamboo sushi mat, shiny side down. 

b. Wet your hands with water, and spread a thin layer of rice over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top. 

c. Add your fillings in a line across the middle of the rice. 

d. Using the bamboo mat, roll the sushi tightly, pressing down to seal the edges. 

e. Repeat with the remaining nori sheets and fillings.

Cutting and Serving 

a. Use a sharp knife to cut each sushi roll into 8-10 pieces. 

b. Serve the sushi with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger on the side.
